The Island Housing Trust provides hope and tangible solutions for hundreds of working island families and individuals. The Trust acquires and creates permanently affordable homes, both ownership and rental, to bridge the gap between the island’s high property values and the families who live and work here earning low and moderate incomes. The word “permanently affordable” is the cornerstone of the Trust’s approach. Using a nationally recognized ground lease model, the Trust lowers the initial cost of home ownership by eliminating land costs through grants and donations, and in exchange, the homeowner agrees that if they should sell their home, they will sell it to another income qualified family at an affordable price. This hands-on stewardship approach helps safeguard against the threat of foreclosure and ensures that homes on Trust land remain affordable for future generations of island families.
